In the opening for several of Bravo’s Real Housewives series, the ladies are seen holding an object that represents their location. The New York Housewives hold apples, it's oranges in Orange County and peaches for Atlanta. But the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills aren't holding fruit. No, each of these new housewives is seen with a gigantic diamond in her hands -- but what they should have been holding is platinum, because Bravo has struck gold with this glitzy gang of gals.
I admit that I am biased. I love all things Real Housewives, but this installment has raised the bar to a higher level. The glamour, money and fame help it succeed at being the furthest thing from reality -- a total indulgent fantasy. Of course their lives are far from perfect, and naturally, drama ensues.
Viewers of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills are given entry into a very exclusive world full of nannies, private jets, couture fashion, beauty at any price and decadent living. When Wendy Williams recently asked the new housewives who the table-flipper of the crew is, housewife Lisa Vanderpump assured the audience that they had “people” to do that for them. Touche!
The six housewives are a really interesting group of women with Hollywood ties. British restauranteur Lisa VanderPump acts as group leader. She's an empty-nester who can usually be found accompanied by at least one of her four tiny dogs. Businesswoman Andrienne Maloof’s family owns Las Vegas’ Palms Casino Resort, along with an entertainment enterprise that includes a music group and the NBA team, the Sacramento Kings. Paris Hilton’s aunts, Kim and Kyle Richards, are both former child actresses, and have four children each. Oklahoma native Taylor Armstrong worked hard to escape the middle class and join the upper crust, but she focuses much of her time on maintaining a youthful look in order to keep her powerful husband. Last of all is Kelsey Grammer’s wife of 13 years, former professional dancer Camille, whose marriage crumbles (they're currently divorcing) throughout the season.
What I also love is that all six of these larger-than-life women have children, ranging from preschool to college age. While VanderPump's children are out of the house, Kyle Richards, famous for roles in Little House on the Prairie and the original Halloween, took a break from acting to concentrate on her greatest passion -- being a mother. Older sister Kim Richards, famous for starring in Disney’s Escape to Witch Mountain, is intent on focusing a little more on her own ambitions and a little less on her three daughters and one son, ages 15 to 24. The sisters conflict over their life choices. Tycoon Maloof is an integral member of her family dynasty, but business takes a back seat to her three sons. Armstrong has trouble brewing in paradise -- the mother of a 4-year-old daughter describes her marriage to her venture capitalist husband as 80% business and 20% romance. Grammer is proud of her four nannies (two for each child). She delivered her children via surrogate, which does not go over well with the other housewives.
Beverly Hills is the ultimate installment of the Real Housewives series, and as Bravo suggests, I can’t wait to watch what happens!
