It's a bird, it's a plane, it's… not Jon Hamm! Though the square-jawed Mad Men star was up for the role of Superman in Watchmen director Zack Snyder's upcoming film, he has admitted that he's now out of the running. It turns out that Hamm, 39, has the same Kryptonite as most of Hollywood's established actors: he's too old for the good parts.
"I talked to Zack (Snyder) quite a bit… but no, I think that's a young man's game," Hamm tells MTV. (See the video below. "I think I've been aged out of that one by now. But that's fine with me; there are plenty of other men who are available to put on tights."
We understand why fans have been clamoring for Jon Hamm to play Superman: Hamm is heroically handsome and a dynamite actor (as his long list of award nominations and wins will attest). Hollywood, of course, is usually more interested in a Taylor Lautner type, young enough to keep a franchise going forever. We won't deny that Taylor's abs are fit for the Man of Steel. Ironically, though, the two most popular and successful superheroes in the movies right now -- Iron Man and Batman -- are played by middle-aged men: Robert Downey Jr. is 45 and Christian Bale is 36. Maybe it would be tough for audiences to accept a 40-year-old Superman -- but is it possible that audiences, unlike Hollywood executives, actually value talent over age?
