While other stars like to tiptoe around their sexuality, James Franco isn't afraid to get provocative. In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, the super-hot 32-year-old actor was asked why he seems to have a preference for playing gay characters, as in the films Milk, Howl and the upcoming The Broken Tower. His response?
"There are lots of other reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to go out and have sex with guys," Franco said. "And there are also lots of other aspects about these characters that I’m interested in, in addition to their sexuality... I mean, I’ve played a gay man who’s living in the ’60s and ’70s, a gay man who we depicted in the ‘50s, and one being in the ‘20s. And those were all periods when to be gay, at least being gay in public, was much more difficult. Part of what I’m interested in is how these people who were living anti-normative lifestyles contended with opposition."
And then he added: "Or, you know what, maybe I’m just gay."
Best answer ever! Actually, James Franco -- unlike most sex symbols -- seems to delight in speculation that he's gay. You may ask what his girlfriend of over five years, actress Ahna O'Reilly, makes of this -- but she seems to take it all in stride. In an interview with New York Magazine from July, O'Reilly said that the rumors are to be expected.
"You do a movie where you’re gay, or, in James’s case, more than one, it’s going to happen," she told the magazine. "I know that a lot of people wish he were gay, or think I’m not his real girlfriend. But there’s nothing you can do about that."
Franco does wish that his career would make people a little more open-minded about the way they view sexual preference.
"It's funny because the way that kind of stuff is talked about on blogs is so black-and-white," he complained. "'Is he straight or is he gay?', or 'This is your third gay movie - come out already!' And all are based on, gay or straight, based on the idea that your object of affection decides your sexuality."
We love how fearless and funny James Franco is about this normally touchy issue. Hopefully other actors will get the message! Franco will be co-hosting the 2011 Oscars with Anne Hathaway on February 27th
