Nicole Kidman Opens Up About Fertility Struggle

Nicole Kidman Opens Up About Fertility Struggle

The birth announcement of Nicole Kidman's second baby seemed sudden to her fans -- but for Kidman, the arrival of Faith Margaret came after a long struggle with fertility. Kidman, 43, and husband Keith Urban, also 43, had their biological daughter on December 28 via surrogate, but didn't tell the world the news until January 17. On Sunday's Australian 60 Minutes, the actress opened up about her difficult journey to motherhood. Watch a clip from the interview below!

"We were in the place of desperately wanting another child, and this opportunity arose for us, and I couldn't get pregnant, and we wanted another baby," Kidman says of her decision to have a baby via gestational carrier.

Kidman gave birth to her first child with Urban, daughter Sunday Rose, in 2008. Nicole and ex-husband Tom Cruise also have two teenage children together, Connor and Isabella -- who were adopted after Kidman miscarried in her 20s.

"Anyone who's been in the place of wanting a child knows the disappointment, the pain and the loss that you go through trying and struggling with fertility," she tells 60 Minutes. "I've had a roller coaster ride with fertility. It has never been easy for me. So to now be in this place where I have two gorgeous adopted children and two biological children -- I can't believe that's what happened in my life."

Kidman, who was present for Faith's birth, says that her bond with all of her children is the same, regardless of how they came into her life.

"You'll die for your children, and when you feel that as a parent, that's the unconditional love," she says. "Until you feel it, you can't quite grasp it."

Although Kidman and Urban have not released official photos of Faith Margaret, the Oscar nominee showed off a cellphone photo during the interview. It's hard to see, but the baby has a head of red hair -- just like her mother.

"Sunday had red hair and then it went blonde," Kidman says of her 2-year-old. "Sunday is very much her dad. Everyone says Faith is more me, but who knows, right?"
